Adventure travel in Interlaken

The small town of Interlaken has been surrounded by stories of travel and romance for centuries. The touristic potential of this lovely spot was discovered by 19th century Victorian tourists, who probably couldn’t stop swooning over the stunning landscapes before their eyes: the Bernese Highlands. But today, tourists do more than simply stare in amazement at the Jungfrau peak, or at the green pastures. Although the town is famous for its tourist streets, restaurants, souvenir shops and scenic ambiance, it is the things you can do just outside town that garner the most attention. Adventure travel in Interlaken is the reason why most people (both from Switzerland and abroad) visit this picturesque town, and here’s why:

Walking

Walking doesn’t sound all that adventurous for you? Well, then you should try walking anywhere in the area near Interlaken. Granted, you won’t be given any earth-shattering adrenaline rushes, but in its peaceful, quiet way, taking a walk around Thunersee and Brienzersee lakes might as well seem like a trip back into Victorian times, because with the exception of some modern additions, this is the same stunningly beautiful landscape that charmed tourists in the 19th century.

Hiking

If you like hiking, the first look at the town’s surroundings will make your feet itch for a good lone hike. There are countless hiking trails around Interlaken, thanks to the fact that the town is happily located in the Bernese Highlands. Get off the train at the Interlaken Ost station, and in five minutes you can be on your way up Harder mountain. There are many more exciting trails near Interlaken, just drop by the local tourist information center or hiking equipment shop.

Skydiving

Skydiving is exciting even if you are dropping over an industrial wasteland or a boring field, so imagine how much fun it is when you jump off a plane or helicopter that it hovering over the unspeakable beauty of the Bernese Highlands. Hardened adrenaline junkies will be pleased to know that they can arrange 4000 meter drops in 40 seconds in Interlaken.

Hang Gliding, Paragliding

You don’t have to stop at skydiving if you want to get a good look at the environs of Interlaken – why not also try your hand at hang gliding and paragliding? You can do this in tandem, so if you’re new to adventure sports, you can relax and take in the scenery while steered by a licensed pilot. There are several tour operators that offer paragliding expeditions, but the most popular spots are Schynige Platte and Beatenberg.

Night sledding

There is no shortage of things to do around Interlaken in winter, what with countless opportunities for skiing, ice skating and snowboarding. But one of the most adventurous and wackiest things to do is night sledding – just imagine sliding on the pristine snow at huge speeds, with only the stars twinkling above you! Spending the night sledding is definitely one of the highlights of adventure travel in Interlaken, and several agencies can arrange it for you!
